Camping Tents - Basic Features
Fabric - This feature is important for durability and weight. The most common fabrics used in tent manufacturing are nylon and polyester.
Floors - For the best protection against water leaking into the floor of your tent, choose a tent with a one-piece floor. Some tents are made with floors that have multiple pieces.
Poles - Camping tent poles are made from various materials, the most common being high-strength aluminum, carbon fiber, or fiberglass. Some tent poles are strung with shock cord are are color coded for easy assembly.
Interior Storage - This feature is nice for organizing small items inside your tent. Look for pockets or gear loops on the interior of the tent.
Carrying Case - Most tents come with a carrying case. It should be made of a heavy-duty fabric.
Freestanding - Although it is recommended that you always stake down your tent, it is a nice feature if your tent is easily set up on various surfaces including rock, sand, or snow.
Straight-walled tents - Sometimes referred to as cabin-style tents provide more room on the interior of the tent.
Rainfly - Fit on the top of the tent, and provide protection from precipitation.
Windows and doors - If you do warm weather camping, look for a tent with multiple windows and doors for more ventilation. It is important that the windows and doors have screen mesh, to keep out bugs.
Color - Lighter colors allow more light into your tent. The darker the color of you tent is, the more it filters the natural sunlight.
