Camping Etiquette It is so important to be a good neighbor to other campers as well as mother nature when you are camping. Other campers will appreciate your consideration, and you have every right to expect the same neighborly consideration. Most campgrounds will have rules posted, that every camper should follow, and listed below are some common practices that every good camper should follow: - Leave your campsite cleaner than you found it. Make sure that everything you bring to your campsite, leaves with you.
- Camp in a designated campsite.
- Obtain all required permits.
- Protect water sources from contamination.
- Use biodegradeable soap.
- When using soap and toothpaste, dispose of the wastewater at least 100 feet away from natural water sources and well or faucet water sources.
- Be a good neighbor - control your noise and your pets.
- Be respectful of the natural environment and wildlife.
- When hiking, stay on designated trails.
- Always keep your dog on a leash no longer that 6 feet, and away from public swimming areas.
- Clean up after your pet, and control barking.
- Avoid borrowing tables from other sites.
- Observe Camp Ground Quiet Hours usually between 10 pm and 6 am.
- Nails and wires should not be used on trees because they can cause serious damage to trees.
- Before leaving the campsite, clean your fire pit for the next camper.
- Clean your campsite before leaving. Make it as clean as you would want it if you were arriving that day. The next camper will appreciate it.
- Do not feed or approach wildlife.
- Don't corner a wild animal.
- Report sick or aggressive animals. Many areas are affected by rabies.
- Prevent animals from getting into your food. Consider placing it in your vehicle, or hanging it in a tree (12 feet high, 4 feet from tree trunk).
- Do not attract animals to your campsite by leaving food out. Keep your campsite clean and free of food smells by disposing of all food wastes in the park trash receptacles. Lock all opened food in plastic containers or in your car. And never, ever, leave food in your tent. That includes candy and cookies. You'll sleep more soundly if you know everything is safely out of animals' reach.
