J Camp answers:

Are you car camping or backpacking? Big difference in what will be needed. If you are car camping, bring a quality tent, sleeping pad, warm sleeping bag rated to 0deg or below. Bring some extra blankets if you sleep cold. You will need a stove and fuel, as well as food and water. Bring plenty of socks and long underwear, as well as a warm coat with a waterproof or water resistant outer to keep it dry. You should have warm insulated waterproof boots as well.

If you are backpacking, that is going to require a lot more gear and experience and you should get plenty of summer experience under your belt before you tackle new england in the winter.

I just spent about $150 on my tent, grill, flashlights, air mattress, tablecloth, propane, hot dog roasters, and mountain pie makers. It is really going to depend on which items you choose. You could spend $150+ just on a tent or only $20 depending on the size, brand, etc. The thing to remember to is it can be a bit pricey to start but once you have everything it will last you for years if you take care of it.

J Camp answers:

You could spend the rest of your free time in Grand Teton National Park climbing and hiking. East of the park is the Bridger-Teton National Forest with some boondocking and motorized exploration opportunities. Look at the Jackson listing for a map to a nice free boondocking location at http://www.rv-camping.org/Wyoming.html

A great area for motorized exploration with lakes and streams available for fishing is the Shoshone National Forest. Http://www.rv-camping.org/WY_Lander.html has pictures, maps, and more information on this area.

The Wind River Mountains have thousands of lakes…many accessable only by foot. The area north of Pinedale Wyoming has national forest campgrounds, lakes and streams, boondocking opportunities, but you will have to explore to find the good ones.

If you can take the heat, the area around Moab Utah is excellent for motorized exploring, and there is limited fishing in the Colorado and Green rivers. More information about this area is available at http://www.blm.gov/utah/moab/rec-frame.html

Maybe a trip to the north rim of the Grand Canyon? Lot’s of back country roads and trails to explore, and cooler than the Moab area. Not much for fishing that I know of.

Advice and tips on solo camping?

I am a young adult female that is planning to take an extended road trip this summer. Beginning along the west coast, see Yosemite, Portland, Seattle, travel up into Canada go to Vancouver, the sea to sky drive, eventually get over to Yellowstone.

I am looking for any advice, tips and recommendations for this adventure. As far as what to bring, where to stay, what to eat and any dang thing that you feel may assist my travels. After Yellowstone I am out of places to add to my agenda, I just need to end up back in Arizona.
I will be traveling with just my dog (depending on the border policies).
I’ve done a fair share of solo camping but nothing to this extent.
Also, I will be tent camping and any advice on how to save money throughout the trip would be very helpful!
Thank you
Yes I plan to stay in designated campgrounds only, preferably reserved beforehand. Probably a hotel in Vancouver to experience the city. In the end I will have the entire route including dates I will be at each location, which I will give to my family and roommates.
I have friends in quite a few places along the route as well.

Sounds terrific! I’ve done a lot of such solo travel — in fact my last trip was 18 months ago to Vancouver. If you need a place to stay there I recommend the North Vancouver Motel — very near the Bridge to Stanley Park, a little funky but cheap and clean. While you are there take a day trip up Indian Arm, the fiord north east of the city, and go sea kayaking with the outfitter at Deep Cove. It’s worth a little splurge. Gotta check out the Museum of Anthropology and Granville Island. The Sea to Sky will blow your mind. Some nice days hikes along the way.

Heading to Yosemite, cross over the border from Arizona via Route 66. Have to stop for lunch in funky Oatman, a little hippie town on 66 where the feral burros hang out in the middle of the street, Then traverse the Mojave Desert and go up through Death Valley (if your car can take the heat.) It’s breathtaking.

After leaving Vancouver, make your way across to Jasper and then down the Icefields Parkway to Banff. One of the most gorgeous droves in the world. In Banff, stay at the YWCA hostel at the end of town — cheap, really nice rooms or the cheaper bunkhouse with great free breakfast and a little bar and coffee house on premises — you can walk one block to downtown or step out the back door and hike miles along the Bow River. Do check out the Museum of the Canadian Rockies and the Whyte Museum while there. The Native Peoples museum is right across the road from the hostel.

I would NOT recommend bothering with Yellowstone. It is an RV parking lot in the summer and you will not see much of interest from the road. Also not a terrific place for a dog. Better and in my opinion more beautiful country is just about anywhere in Idaho: Redfish Lake in the Sawtooth Mountains is a spectacular campground and Craters of the Moon is amazing. Most of Utah is fabulous: Moab (Canyonlands Campground), Arches National Park (some restrictions on the dog), Bryce Canyon. Then down through the Grand Canyon area — stick to the National Forests as the Parks themselves will be swollen with tourons.

Practical matters: buy a AAA auto club membership — always can get road service plus motel discounts and free maps. Also buy a new Rand McNally Campground Guide — lots of fun and funky little family run campgounds out west where the owners will bring you cookies in the evening and coffee in the morning. Buy an electric teakettle and frying pan. Lots of campgrounds offer an electrical hookup and it makes cooking breakfast easy and quick. When you stay at Park or State Forest campgrounds look for evening talks by the rangers — fun and good places to meet people.

Have a great time — I envy you that trip!

Midwest road trip to Yellowstone.?

So I’m going to yellowstone national park with my friend this summer, June 7-14, and am beginning planning out this trip. We live near Champaign, IL and I have never been farther west than Branson, MO so I have no idea what is out there beyond Missouri. This trip is kinda helping us check a few things off our bucket list. So what should we do, or where would you recommend going? We are going cheap. We’re roughing it. Every night we will sleep in a tent or the car. We would like to kayak and camp on the shore at some point (know of any good rivers? I love kayaking the current!). We want to go hiking! (Know of any trails that have breath taking scenery?) This is what I REALLLYY want to find: An old honky tonk saloon for us to get a couple of beers (it’s mostly an inside joke). We both love the outdoors and aren’t afraid to get dirty so help me out with some ideas on what I should do!

Wyoming is a beautiful state, and there are a lot of places to hike, camp, and see some honky tonks! Devils Tower is pretty cool. Thermopolis is a nice place to visit and soak in the hot springs. If youre a fan of history, you can check out historical places and monuments in the state too, like the Oregon Trail, forts, and more (cheap!). The southern part of WY, you have the Flaming Gorge. Not too many people, but so gorgeous and plenty of places to enjoy the water and camping. Between Laramie and Cheyenne, you have Veedauwoo, which is a hiking camping area at 8000 ft, and there are trails and rocks, and it is sooo quiet up there. If you prefer, you can park the car at the rest area near-by, where there is civilization. Its at the top of the hill at I-80 and has bathrooms. Of course, Colorado is full of nice places to visit, but there you will have more people and more prices (for example, Vail). Dodge City in Kansas is cool. How about portions of Route 66? Mt Rushmore in South Dakota, and all the other smaller tourist places around there, is a nice place to see. Ooo there was a “nice” honky tonk in Rapid City, but that was about 10 years ago, cant remember…. Scenic Hwy 89 has buffalo in the road, so neat!!! Cant say Im a big fan of Nebraska, but there are some good diners and truck stops along the way, and guarantee there wont be too many people at the camp spots. Make sure you bring rain gear (tent covers) and more, and make sure you bring a WINTER jacket. That is right! I camped at Yellowstone in August and it SNOWED.

what kind of recording format should i look for? what brands are best? what type of camcorder will take the best stills? what kind of camcorder can run for extended times (4 hours or so) where should i be shopping for this kind of camcorder?

*2 days later*
i found a camcorder i rather like, the HITACHI DVD CAMCORDER DZGX5020A for $230. but on the reviews, customers discussed problems with the dvd’s skipping and poor picture quality
ok, so maybe not for 4 hours at a time, but i do want maximum running time….lol

I agree with iridflare.

DO NOT GET A DVD based camcorder. The discs are unstable, the video quality is terrible (especially if you want to edt or otherwise get into your computer), copying the DVDs is a pain. DO NOT GET A DVD based camcorder.

MiniDV tape provides best available video quality and when you run out of tape, take the tape out, lock it store it and put in another tape – If you take extra tape, you can go on for as long as you have power.

Hard drive and some flash memory based camcorders provide the next best quality – but they have their issues… Like… What will you do if you fill the hard drive? Unless you are planning on taking a computer with you to dump some of that video, you other option is to delete video… So, you can figure out what problems that causes…

You won’t find much for that budget… Canon ZR800 or 830. Sony DCR-HC28 (maybe)… Get an extra rechargeable high-capacity battery, or two – the ones in the box don’t last very long (no matter which camera you get). That is the only way you’ll be able to run for as long as you have said – and those batteries are not cheap.

Why would you run the camera for 4 hours?

HAVE FUN!

Info on running away and Illinois for a story?

My characters are on the run from the law, so they need to leave the state – and fast.

My main character, Kathrina (16) and her dead ex-boyfriend’s gang buddy, Charlie(18) were involved in a robbery that escalated to a shooting. Mike (Kathrina’s ex-boyfriend) pulls a gun on the shoppers, the cops come, kill mike, and charlie and kathrina are out of there so fast they leave skid marks behind.

Ok, so maybe I’m getting ahead of myself here. Charlie and Kathrina don’t exactly no each other, they’ve really only heard of each other. Let me explain.

Charlie and Mike are in a gang (they’re called The Tanks, please tell me if that is already taken by a REAL gang, because if it is I want nothing to do with it) and they went to rob the store on orders from the gang. Charlie and Kathrina’s “relationship” is based on hearing about each other though Mike. Once they do get to know each other though, they end up hating each others guts.

Are you with me so far?
I hope so, because we’re moving on.

Charlie gets kicked out of the gang, because they blame him for mike’s death – yes I am aware that if this was real life, they just might kill him instead of let him run, but that would really put a whole in my story soooo yeah – So I need to know, A. if they would rat a former member out to the cops, and B. if there plan for escape is possible.

Try to stay with me here ok?
Alright here goes nothing…

Charlie and Kathrina live in NY, so that is their starting point.
Kathrina’s plan of escape is to drive to a friends house in Illinois, hang low for a while, then drive all the way to Yellowstone park and camp out there until she is of age. So basically she wants to live in the wild for 2 or 3 years and drag this poor guy (charlie) with her. Yes I am aware that this plan SUCKS and would never ever ever really work. BUT…my characters are under a lot of pressure right now, so give them a break, it was the best they could think of in so short a time.

You got it all down?
Good, moving on.

Ok, now here’s the thing. My characters refuse to tell me how they plan to do this, and Kathrina just wont give up the location of her buddy in Illinois. (you see what happens to you when you’ve been writing your whole life? You end up TALKING to your characters and getting frustrated when they don’t answer…)

So how do I write the story? I have never been to Illinois, or Yellowstone, in fact I don’t even think I have been to that part of the country in general. SOOO yeah.

Anyway, I need to know from you guys, where in Illinois her friend is
If this plan is possible, keeping in mind these people are crazy and there life depends on getting as far away from NY as possible, and how do I make it possible
If a gang would rat out a former member
If TANKS is an actual gang name, or if I am free to use it
And I need to know as much about Illinois as I would need to when my characters stay at this “friends” house.

WOW, if you are still with me on this, I love you. Ok, so maybe not, but really THANK YOU SO MUCH for staying with me on this.

Thanks again and if I ever get this thing published I might even put a “thank you” in it for you.

I really need your help, my story is dead like her ex boyfriend without it.
I was actualy thinking of Canada, but then i realized, how could an 18 year old boy cross the border with a 16 year old girl, a miner, and get away with it? (also i have no idea about anything when it comes to crossing the border and stuff) I was kind of thinking that yellowstone might check to see if there was anyone camped out for so long, but i wasn’t sure. thanks for varifying

Does anyone know where else they could go?

thanks for the gang stuff by the way, that helps me a lot, it fills a big gap in the story

First of all I wouldn’t name any character Kathrina. Sounds to much like Katrina(ugh) bad carma. Maybe Katlin?
If I was in Illinois I would flee too,,,most boring state! Visited this summer…not a pleasant place.
First off,yes I think gang members would rat each other out,if they thought the other one ratted on them.Or for a lesser prison stay.
I have been to Yellowstone(twice) it is a beautiful place..but you can’t camp out in a national park for 2-3 years…it’s just isn’t allowed.
Unless you are a camp host, and I think that is only for 6mos-yr.
A wilderness sounds good. But I would either flee to canada or somewhere else…not in a park. Maybe find an abandon house out in the woods? Start fixing it up…living without water, electricity.

i need serious help! all leads down to a frog? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!?

Hi my name is Faith i am a current owner of a BEAUTIFUL horse named Lakota

http://www.flickr.com/photos/45003508@N02/sets/72157623082028732/

the very beginning 5 years ago:
on march 18 my horse was born. her mother was killed during birth so she was sent to a horrible place with a mare that had lost her foal. the owner of the mare kept lakota until she was 3 her nephew was going to do steeple chase with her. the boy didn’t know anything about horses so his 85 year old aunt(in a wheelchair) had to tack her and untack her. in order to get the bridle and halter she pulled her brown ear to get her to drop her head. her nephew run her and ran her and jumped her and jumped her until she couldn’t run anymore. his aunt told him there was no use to keeping the broken filly so she put her up at an auction and sold her to the people who i bought her from.they retrained her in western. her ad had amateurs riding her they had her on grass hay only giving her 2 flakes and didn’t give her alfalfa because it makes her to “hyper” to do any thing with. so the day after my b day i go down there to ride because my parents and i were going to yellowstone and we were going horse back riding and it was my moms idea to freshen us up before the trip. so we went to the carsley’s( http://www.carsleyhorseranch.com/home ) for a trail ride they put me on a different rescue named Low Rider and so off we went… halfway down the street my mom and i decide to trot ahead and Low Rider Takes off and i fall off . after we come back the they mention a summer horse camp and so i decided to go and so i become a Better rider blah blah blah then i start going out with this guy who planed on buying lakota (before i even knew i wanted to buy a horse). then a whole buch of boring stuff happens then he has to go to arizona (i live in new mexico) because he was going to move there and so i pretended i was sad but i really wasn’t because he was getting on my nerves and so while he is gone i ride lakota since he was moving and my mom and i were considering buying a horse(Lakota). but before that erik the guy that owns the ranch told me if he didn’t sell lakota he would sell her for hamburger. so i was all worried Blah Blah Blah (oh and my mom was getting married in a few weeks) so we were at toucan market this place where they sell wine and meat and stuff like that and there was a pile of hamburger and the sign said dakota farms then lean hamburger and i read it lakota hamburger so i started freaking out because by then i had connected with her and we shared a bond stronger then words. so later that week my mom gets married and later that weekend we go visit them and i was surprised with the present of lakota my mom had bought her for me and so the monday after/1st day of school we had our good friend/ trainer pick her up and take her to his place.blah blah blah.

Yesterday:
(she is almost broke i can w/t/c or l on her we are running barrels and everything)
i went to pick lakota’s feet and 1/2 of her frog on her left front foot is gone so i tell my mom(who i am more experienced then) and we just forget about it and move on.

Today:
a pick out lakota’s feet there is no change i do my stuff in the arena then i am asked if i wanted to go on a trail ride( i hate trail rides on lakota because she always trys to buck me off or something stupid like that) and i say ok because lakota was doing really well and is doing what ever i say and so we head off. half way down the trail lakota jumps out from under me and i fall off she almost jumped the barbed wire fence and almost had me on the train tracks so i walk back with my mom and dan’s (my trainer) horse wart and dan and his wife rose continue the trail ride (dan is now riding lakota) and i am walking a horse back to the barn with my mom on her horse hunny. when dan and rose come back with lakota i untack her and brush her and i pick up her hoof with the broken frog and there is a huge rock wedged between the 2 separate piecesf her frog and i start to think what if she stepped on the rock and then jumped and then i fell off. then on the way home my mom says “what are we going to do that is the 5th time someone has come off of her back and 4 of the times was you falling off(then there was a moment of silence) mabey we should sell her” and it went down hill from there

what should i do?
with the frog problem?
how do i deal with my mom wanting to sell the closest thing to my heart?

please help if my mom gets her way my heart will be broken and shattered all over the floor and i might as well die.
she can’t take my one prized possession from me

thanks
~Faith~

I would get the opinion of an experienced farrier. It is better to nip a problem in the bud. It sounds like you love your horse a lot, I would like if you keep me updated on what happens. It sounds like Lakota has a similar problem to my horse, Indigo. He is due for a trim soon and I will ask my farrier then. I’ll let you know what he says.

What Pet should I get for My Journey?

Hello All,

I know that this isn’t the average question, but i feel i must ask it because i can’t decide.

I am leaving everything behind to travel all of america.

I am only taking my car, my laptop, my gps unit, and some camping gear.

I would really like a pet to be with me, but i cannot choose what pet to get.

I love dogs and already have many dogs (but they’re my family’s – they’d never let me take one), but my money situation will be extrememly tight and i don’t know if i’d be able to supply a dog with enough food and attention.

So i guess i’m asking for a suggestion on a pet that would be spending a lot of time with me in a car and outdoors camping, who would be easy and cheap to feed, as well as something to keep me company as a friend.

Thank you for any suggestions, and please don’t just shout out the animals you have, I have many pets – this is a specialty question.
Good point. I was thinking of adopting from our local shelter, but my mother keeps harping at me saying that the vet bills to get it all vaccinated and stuff before i got will harm me greatly…

I think you’re right though. I think i just need to research good mid-sized outdoorsy dogs :]

Thank you.

Dogs seem to be the only type of pet that would do well in this sort of situation. Just get a smaller rescue dog> my chi/dachsund mix only eats about 1 cup of food a day…that is not much and you might be able to afford a smaller dog.

ADD: well im not sure about your shelter but at mine they vaccinate, deworm, microchip, and spay/neuter. That cuts down on a lot of money spent on the dog.

I’m looking to go for 2 to 3 months, with the intention of visiting as much of america as possible.

Main states being, Texas, Alabama, California, Maryland, Washington, Nevada …and as much others as possible.

Flights alone will cost near 600 (euro)

J Camp answers:

I have toured much of the US in my lifetime. Most of it was by car or RV. But that was before gas was outrageously expensive.

You can see and do a lot by bus and by train. I did a cross country train trip and it was great.

Be sure to see Yosemite, Grand Canyon, the shorelines of both Oregon and northern California, the Redwoods, Washington State, the Rocky Mountains, Crater Lake, Mount Rushmore, the Devils Tower, Smoky Mountain National Park, the Catskills, Acadia National Park, there are just so many places…..

I hiked the Grand Canyon (down, camped on bottom, then back out), and only recommend it if you’re very young and strong and are suitably equipped with water and provisions. It’s something you’ll never forget.

This didn’t cost much money… Most of the time was camping or very cheap room or motel if it was cold.

Do a little research, plot your course, and have fun!! I am so glad I saw those things when I was younger. Good luck!

Any jewelery experts here? Specifically with watches, and watch bands?

I have this really cute Betsey Johnson watch, but it has the most hideous watch band. It is too gaudy for my tastes. I’ve went around to jewelery stores and most have basically told me that it would be impossible to replace the band…but, there has to be a way, couldn’t there? So, my question is, does anyone in the Toronto area know of any exceptionally skilled jeweler who may be able to help me out? Thanks for any help.

J Camp answers:

Well this is kind of complicated im not from toronto but watch bands are held to the watch with pins, and have different sizes such as 18mm or 20mm or 16mm. Im guessing yours is 16 or 18 so find that out first and then go to a watch store and ask them to check it out. If that doesnt work you can go online and search 16mm watch bands or you can contact the company. Hope i helped

Tips for easing anxiety over leaving toddler?

Okay… I’m sure I have issues like other moms. My daughter is 2 1/2 completely healthy, happy and beautiful. But lately I have been having such a hard time leaving her at daycare, or letting her go to her fathers for a few hours. I end up getting anxiety, and thinking morbid thoughts like “what if a car slips and hits her on the sidewalk” I know it sounds bad, but that’s what goes through my head. My daughter’s father is having such a hard time handling me, and I’m sure I need therapy over it. But it got worse recently, and I’m almost positive it has to do with my father passing away (last month, and we were very close) I’m having such a hard time dealing with my loss, that I feel like I have to cling to my daughter I feel like she could be taken from me if I dont’ watch her dilligently. Don’t worry I don’t keep her in a bubble, we just went camping and she falls and scratches herself all the time, so it’s not falling I worry about it, it’s just knowing that there are times she is not with me, and it’s those times I freak out. I just feel like I know she’s safe with me anytime because I’d give my life for her in a second. Anyway if there are any moms out there who can relate, I’d love some feedback.

I’m a dad and I can relate, especially when it comes to leaving our children with (trustworthy) babysitters. But you have to let go sometimes, because:

- Your child will be better off by being around other people;
- I find that being apart from them makes me look forward to being around them more; and
- You can’t control everything, and it’s not healthy to try

As you undoubtedly know, bad things can happen even when your child is with you. Do what you can, within reason, to prevent bad things from happening, and to prepare in case they do. After that, there isn’t much more you can do except worry needlessly. Better to practice letting go now, because kids grow up fast!

My 3- year old son wants to sleep in his tent… Is that ok?

My son was having a hard time transitioning to sleeping in his room so one night we went “camping” in his room with his toddler tent to show him his room wasn’t scary.

J Camp answers:

Sure, let him sleep in the tent. What’s the harm? He’ll grow out of it very soon, and then it’ll just be this transition thing that you did for him. But for him, it’ll be an adventure. It’ll be camping, just like mommy/daddy do. You can tell him all about camping, and what you do when you go camping. You can tell him about fishing/hiking/the woods/s’mores/barbecue etc.
Not only will it help him transition, but it’ll also teach him a thing or two about camping. Three year olds have very very vivid imaginations, so it’ll be a great learning experience for him.

Help! Would you read this novel?

Sorry if this is annoying, but I’m writing a novel and frankly don’t want to get that invested if it doesn’t interest anybody. Plus, it’s about a topic I’m obsessed with so I don’t really know if anyone else would find it interesting. Whatever, here’s the premise:

A teen girl has been held captive in her Dad’s mansion since she was a toddler. She’s well sustained and everything but she eventually decides to break out – into 1944 Austria. She’s trying to adjust to life while also being on the run as her father publicly lied about her being Jewish intentionally. She’s finally captured and taken to a concentration camp where she [obv.] fights disease, gets assault by a specific officer at the camp, and watches everyone around her die. Her Dad has the power to save her but doesn’t, so she fights the inner turmoil of desertion. Eventually she gets put in the gas chamber…and you know the rest. [or do you? =D]

The MC is extremely strong willed and resilient so it’s not a weak story – there’s a lot of action and fighting. Anyway, what do you guys think? Am I wasting my time?

Personally, I wouldn’t read it, however, that doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea, I’m just not in to historical fiction.

It sounds good, I like the concept of it, I know tons of people who would love to read it. Not everyone has to like it anyway, all that matters is that YOU love it. And since you do then you should write it. I mean if you’re obsessed with the topic then there’s bound to be others obsessed with it too. For every writer there’s a reader- stephen King is right about this. Don’t be afraid to try something because you’re afraid people won’t like it. Everyone will have haters- just like everyone will have fans. Writing a story is not something that will ever waste your time- especially if you love what you write.

Quick domestic legal help needed, please!? (very detailed, sorry so long!)?

Husband is an alcoholic. He is drunk tonight – like EVERY night. He goes to work and has a very good job, so he isn’t a “deadbeat”. He went back to school (while I worked, but he also got student loans) to get his Master’s Degree. I am currently a stay-at-home with our 2 sons (1 and 1/2 and 3 yr old). A few month’s ago our 3 yr old son stopped wanting daddy to put him to bed (this was a regular routine that daddy put him to bed) and I put our younger son down most times. This was during a 3-month hiatus of my husband’s drinking, NOT when he was drunk! Anyway, somehow, being a mom and always looking out for my son’s I wondered why my son started crying everytime daddy was going to put him to bed. He begged for me. In the back of my mind, I have to admit child abuse entered my mind (sexual). I have brushed it aside, while still paying close attn to any tell-tale signs, but the thought crops up every once in a while. Well, tonight, my son had his jammies on and my husband who had already started drinking was sitting with him on the couch. Husband started working outside the home 3 wks ago (was self-employed), so I assume my son misses his dad. Anyway, my son pulled up his shirt and rubbed his tummy against my husband’s bare chest (husband had his shirt off). My husband looked at me wide-eyed and said, “Where’d he get that from? He’s never done that to ME before!” I said, “NOT from ME!” Then, my husband went on to ask if my son had a MALE teacher teaching his mini soccer camp, which he participated in this week -today was last day. I said, “No, his teacher is female. Why?!” Anyway, I couldn’t help myself after that and said, “The only person I’ve ever seen him do that to is YOU, TONIGHT!” My husband went on to ask my son, pleasantly, where he got that from. My son said from himself. Maybe we are making a MUCH bigger deal out of this than necessary, I HOPE! But after that, I told my husband that I had had doubts about HIM in the past (I realize I should never have brought this up, esp. while my husband had been drinking, but it’s a done deal now.) After that, my husband said he was not going to help put the kids to bed, and like every night, I put them down. When I came back from putting the kids down, my husband said he wanted a divorce and had taken his pillows off the bed down to the couch. I was fine with that. I didn’t want to argue because he was really drunk by that point. I went to bed and was reading when he came up and started getting in our bed. I said, “What are you doing?” At this point, I didn’t want to be around him at all. He told me to turn off the small lamp I had on. I said No, I’m reading. He came over to my side of the bed and looked down at me and said something to the extent of, “One day, I’m going to bury you!” It scared the crap out of me! He told me he had one problem and I had 4??? I told him I had 1 and it was him. He went on about how I am lazy and never do anything and was good for nothing (though I take care of our 2 toddlers EVERY day, mostly 24/7 and keep the house as neat as possible.) I have also had SEVERAL issues with his mom who lives nearby and he and she always side together against me. You can read other posts to see more details. I told him I was no longer married to him and took off my ring. He took off his. I stopped responding to him and TRIED to read while he stared at me. He turned on the tv and left the room. I took the remote and turned off the tv. I tried to hide the remote. He came back in and turned the tv back on. I used the remote and turned it back off. I just wanted him OUT! Well, I couldn’t hold my tongue anymore and I threw his pillows down the stairs and pointed to the door. I told him I would call 911 if he didn’t leave me alone. I was really scared with him being drunk and after that threat! He went outside to smoke a cigarrette and I went down to take his keys and hide them so he couldn’t drive. I saw the opportunity to keep him out of the house and locked the door. He knocked. He called my cell phone to let him back in. I was too scared. I really thought about calling 911 but I didn’t want him to lose his job or anything by getting thrown in jail. I listened through the window to him calling his mom to come get him. He told her he was in a bad situation, that we argued about HER and that he stuck up for her and I was mad so I locked him out! Such a liar! I THINK she came to pick him up. I was “hiding” upstairs. I really think I should get AT LEAST a temporary restraining order on him… Advice please!!! And, yes, I am fully aware about and have attended Alanon. We also went to marriage counseling, which progressed to counseling for him individually because the PHD counselor said he couldn’t help US anymore without HIM getting help first. He went for a few months alone, quitting drinking for 3 months, but now has started back about 2-3 months ago and counselor refuses to see him until he stops drinking for at least 2 wks. This could really be a “hit
(continued) “hit rock bottom” or not… Yes, I love him or I wouldn’t still be in this awful mess. I’m not currently “in love” with him because he constantly puts me down, admittedly never gives me any emotional support, and I have stopped trusting him. He was arrested about 5 yrs ago for a similar threat and domestic violence when he was drunk and at that time was also doing drugs, of course I “felt sorry” for him and ended up dropping the charges. He has been clean of drugs for about 18 months. I had no idea he was a drug user or alcoholic when I first fell in love with him 9 yrs ago! I used to be very naive, evidently! What are my rights? Should I get a temporary restraining order or what? I live in NC.

I believe you’d get more answers if you posted this in the correct section. This is the tattoos section.

But my mom has this problem. You’ve got to be firm! Stand up for yourself, respect yourself, and get some confidence. Stand up straight, be assertive, dress to kill, and stop saying you’ll do people favors. If you respect yourself and have confidence in yourself, people won’t think that they can push you over. Start prioritizing! You come first. Then your kids and family. Don’t watch another kid on your son’s birthday!!! What are you doing? If you let that woman guilt trip you into watching the kid, you are doing yourself a disservice not to mention your son. Your family is getting the short end of the stick. Just tell the woman it is your son’s birthday and you need to be with your family. Tell her you cannot watch the kid anymore unless you are being paid, because it has become a full time job. This is ridiculous, and you are letting it happen. Stand up! It’s not confrontation, it’s being assertive and not being a pushover. You need to start practicing!

As the daughter of a pushover, I can’t stand seeing how people treat my mom. They think they can ask her to do anything. And she will. She resents it, but she does it. And it’s all because of the way she carries herself and acts. I’m a confident person. People would never, ever ask me to do things or talk to me the way they talk to her. It’s because she lets them. She watches people’s kids, drives people to the mechanic, helps people find their lost dogs. Some of the time it’s just neighborly stuff, but sometimes people really abuse it and treat her like a slave. Now that I’m grown up and don’t live with her it’s not as much of a problem for me, but it was awful! You have no idea how many times other people and their problems came before me and my siblings, just because she couldn’t say no. It was terrible to see how comfortable people were asking my mom to do their chores, but it was also hurtful to me that my mom chose to do those things rather than spend time with me. I know that this is a psychological issue, but still. It hurts when your mother is there for others more than she is for you. If you let yourself become the human kleenex, your whole family suffers. You have to be willing to do what it takes to be there for your family, and yes, that includes confrontation.

There is also a difference between a friend and a user. If your neighbor is your friend, she will understand. If your neighbor is just using you, then maybe your “friendship” will be ruined. In that case, you never had a friend in her. You were just a convenient person to get to watch the kid.

Is this speech good?????

IM 13 AND I HAVE TO PRESENT A 3 MIN SPEECH.

Imagine living in a world where being “yourself” is a crime. If you walked on the path instead of the gutter and if you are not wearing the yellow Star of David on your clothing you could be arrested and sent to a concentration camp and never be heard from again. Adolf Hitler changed the life of many people. Not in a good way, in a bad way. He made the Jewish people’s life HELL. Most of them wished they were dead instead of alive, he sent them to concentration camps, they weren’t given food, and they starved to death. The Jews had to go through a lot in the concentration camps. First the kids and the elderly got gassed, because they couldn’t do the work. They were too un-fit. Some men and women was sent to the Gas Chambers as well. The women that refused to give their baby up were immediately sent to the gas chambers -which can hold up to 2,000 people – toxic gas was dropped down from the roof. When all the people in the gas chambers were dead their bodies were cremated or put into pits.
A young 13 year old girl named Anne Frank was a Jew, she had a family, she had friends. She went to school and she lived in a nice cozy house. Until she had to go into hiding. Because Hitler was rounding up all the Jews and sending them to concentration camps or to get killed.
Anne Marie Frank was born on the 12th of June 1929 in the city of Frankfurt, She was a very pretty Jewish girl, with dark curly hair., Her mother was Edith Hollander and her father was Otto Frank. She had an older sister called Margot Frank she was sixteen. On the 13th of March 1933 elections were held in Frankfurt for the municipal council, and Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Party won, The Franks began to fear what would happen to them if they remained in Germany. So they fled to the Netherlands, where Otto started a company in Amsterdam. Over 300 thousand Jews left Germany between 1933 and 1939. By February 1934, Anne and her family had arrived in Amsterdam,In May 1940, the Netherlands was invaded by Germany, and the new government began to persecute Jews, so Anne and her sister could only go to Jewish schools. Jews couldn’t ride bicycles, they couldn’t use cars, couldn’t meet their Christian friends, they couldn’t go into restaurants, they weren’t allowed into the theatres or swimming pools, they had to wear the yellow star of David on their clothing so everyone could clearly see them as Jews.
Then it got worse, the franks decided to go into hiding for awhile. Otto said it will only be for two or three months. On the morning of Monday, 6 July, 1942. the family moved into the hiding place. Otto Frank left a note in their old house that said they were going to Switzerland. The secret annexe (that they were hiding in) was a three-story space entered from behind a bookcase on a landing above Otto’s business.
four people were the only employees who knew of the people in hiding. the helpers catered for all of their needs, ensured their safety and supplied them with food and other supplies. All were aware that if caught they could face the death penalty for sheltering Jews.
On the 13th of July, the Franks were joined in hiding by the Van Daans family.
Anne kept a diary with her, she wrote everything that was happening in her life. She called her diary kitty, that diary was the only thing that was keeping her company. She had no friends to talk to, only 16 years old peter who was always in the attic (his room). Anne hoped, when the war ended – she would find her friends and tell them that she hided from the Nazis and how she survived living in such a small space. With only small amounts of food a day. But that day never came. On the morning of August 1944, the German Security Police found out about the jews that were hiding upstairs in the office.. On September 3, the group was deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp, and arrived after a three-day journey. The men were forcibly separated from the women and children.
The women were forced to strip naked to be disinfected, had their head shaved and tattooed with an identifying number on their arm. By day, the women were used as slave labour and Anne was forced to haul rocks and dig rolls of sod. by night, they were crammed into overcrowded barracks. In March 1945, a epidemic typhus (Also called Jail fever) spread through the camp and killed approximately 17,000 prisoners including Anne and Margot Frank. Edith (Anne’s mum) was selected for the gas-chamber. She escaped with a friend to another section of the camp, where she remained through the winter, but died of exhaustion and malnutrition in January 1945 at the age of forty-four. Otto Frank was the only survivor who was hiding from the Nazis. He later found annes diary, it got published in Dutch – in 1947. Today, her diary has been translated into 67 languages and is one of the most widely read books in the world.

Too long for three minutes. Being yourself means in feeling and thinking. The Nazi’s condemned the Jews for their race. Like the Gypsies. People often received letters from relatives in concentration camps. Hitler changed the life of many people? He made the Jewish people’s life HELL – it was not like that sophie. They weren’t given food, and they starved to death – actually the Germans used many more ways to kill people. In the end that was in such a hurry they did not bother humiliating and abusing people but killed the ones that were no good labor forces the same day they arrived.

Reading this reveals many things wrongly understood. You have to start all over again or this will not be interesting. Try to grab peoples attention with better information. Anne Frank was not a pretty girl but an ordinary girl. Her diary is interesting due to that fact. It would not have helped us if she was the best or well known or good looking or whatever. I wanted to mention that but let someone read it if you have re-written it. I would have used the word Imagine much later for suspense. Better not in the beginning. First facts and then Imagine the worries…

Anyone know any good summer camp activities?

I am 15, and a “Playground Aide” for 5-12 year olds this summer. We have about 6 sites, with 60 kids each. At my site, we have a staff meeting tomorrow for activity planning. I started today, and it went horrible, so we want more structure.

Let me remind you, this is GOVERNMENT FUNDED. The fee for the camp is $20 for 6 weeks, M-F, 9-3. We have NO BUDGET. We have some sports equipment and basic art supplies.

Anyone have any ideas for things we could do in the following categories. I’ve never been a parent, and have no idea what enterntains kids.

Categories-
-Performing Arts
-Music
-Sports and Games
- Art

Thanks! The person with the most activities picked from your list tomorrow at the meeting wins the 10 points. THANKS!
Any ideas accepted. I just need something kiddy to take in tomorrow! Thanks.

German Spotlight – Play in complete darkness with one person on a hill or mound with a flash light. The rest have the goal of trying to sneak onto the hill without being spotted. The person with the spotlight has to call out the name of the person they spotted to get them out.

Life size Monopoly – Use a roll of butcher paper to layout as a giant board. You can use the Monopoly game pieces to go with it.

Squirt gun fight is always fun

Sardines – Opposite of hide and go seek. One person hides and everybody else tries to find that person. As they find the person they quietly hide with them until everybody has finally located the hiding horde. Lots of fun, especially in the dark.

Scavenger hunt – Have find a list of things or make a theme of objectives.

Trade up – Split into groups and have each group start with something simple like a pencil. They then go where ever they can and talk to people about trading what they have for something bigger. The group that comes back with the biggest item or maybe the most interesting wins.

Any age group loves sculpey. It will cost some money, but is reasonable and the clay seems to go a long way.

Legos are great for entertaining young children. They can build for hours. You probably ask some people if they could lend some legos for some of the sessions.

If you have any sporting equipment like balls, bats, cones, etc. Having different activity stations help to keep kids interested by moving them from station to station every 10-15 minutes.

You can also create an obstacle course out of anything that is around and time them individually or as groups to complete the obstacle course.

College question….?

Currently i am in my freshman year of highschool and it seems maybe a little earlier to think about college, but I dream and plan on going to a top school when i graduate so im trying to get prepared now and get excellent grades. What shold I prepare and do before then? What kind of jobs/internships should i do in the summer and classes and SAT prep. I dont currently know what my best subjects and favorite are but i love english and biology and my gpa is high honor roll. I take all honors classes that are available and will next year. I play jv feild hockey, ice hockey and i am starting crew. I also am taking a 6th course (photography) and am in MUN, mission commitee (donate weekly chuch offerings to dif. charities) and am planning on starting my own club to send education supplies to kids in africa. THis summer i also am working at a church camp program for underpriveleged children. Is this a good start ? What else can i do? Oh and my gpa is 5.5 out of 6.0 which is around a 90-9.
Oh one more question…if anyone responds that goes to a top school or a great school for their field what did you have on your resume and what to do think makes you unique. I also apologize for my grammar/spelling my internet connection is slow!
Oh im not burned out i mean i work hard but also take lots of time off to relax and the work isnt terribly hard the first year

J Camp answers:

In addition to good grades and SAT scores, the trick to getting into a good school is to do what you love, as long as you do something. It sounds like you’re just fine there. Don’t go piling on extra activities because you hope they’ll look impressive, unless they’re also things you really want to do. It will help you to pursue leadership roles, such as team captain or the club you’re planning on starting, but again, the key is quality, not quantity.

Also, when you think about what constitutes a “good” college, don’t get too hung up on rankings and prestige. If you still don’t know what you want to study as junior year gets closer and you have an idea of your SAT range, think in terms of what kind of learning environment is best for you. For right now, just focus on keeping yourself challenged but engaged with what you’re doing, and it’ll all work out.

need help getting started collecting camping equipment?

My fiance and I are registering on Amazon.com for our wedding because we want to build some a supply of camping gear. It’s me, him, and our 4 year old. We need a tent, coleman stove, you name it. I just don’t know where to start. I want to get quality stuff so any advice would be appreciated to get started. We probably will mostly do “car camping” to start, where you park right near your camp site. If someone has a list of stuff I could register for, that would be great. I remember my mom taking us all the time when we were little, and this is a tradition I would like to carry on. We really need help on choosing the right coleman stove and a tent! We probably will register for cots too. ( a luxury I didn’t have as a kid. ha ha.

J Camp answers:

A large air bed is better than a cot by far. A small (3-4 man) double wall, free standing dome type tent (with a full fly that reaches the ground, none of those little tiny flies just on the tip) for sleeping only, and a larger screen tent to go over or near the picnic table, where you’ll spend a lot of time, would be nice. Folding chairs are sturdier than those fold up chairs if you have room to pack them. You’ll want a good thick cooler, and two burner Coleman stove, and decent sleeping bags, not cotton but 100% synthetic. Always get the smallest, least fancy item, you might need, not the most complicated, but the most traditional and not the biggest and most expensive.

Coleman stoves and coolers are good but tents and sleeping bags are not their forte. A better bet would be to register at REI.

If you are considering having children than learn from this..

1. Child Prep#1- Dressing small children is not as easy as it seems: Buy an octopus and a string bag. Attempt to put the octopus into the string bag so that none of the tentacles hang out. Time allowed for this: all morning.

2.Child Prep #2- Get completely ready to go out. Then, wait outside the bathroom for half an hour. Go out the front door. Come in again. Go out. Come back in. Go out again. Walk down the front path. Walk back up it. Walk down it again. Walk very slowly down the road for 5 minutes. Stop to minutely inspect every cigarette butt, piece of used chewing gum, dirty tissue and dead insect along the way. Retrace your steps. Scream that you’ve had as much as you can stand, until the neighbors come out and stare at you. Give up and go back into the house. You are now just about ready to take a small child for a walk.

3.Child Prep #3- Women: To prepare for maternity, put on a dressing gown and stick a beanbag down the front. Leave it there for 9 months. After 9 months, take out 10% of the beans. Men: To prepare for paternity, go to the local Pharmasist, tip the contents of your wallet on the counter, and tell the pharmacists to help themselves. Then go to the supermarket. Arrange to have your salary paid directly to their head office.

4.Child Prep #4- Always repeat everything you say at least five times.

5.Child Prep #5- Find a couple who are already parents. Observe them for one evening. Then comment on their methods of discipline, lack of patience, appallingly low tolerance levels, and how they have allowed their children to run riot. Suggest ways in which they might improve their child’s sleeping habits, toilet training, table manners and overall behavior. Enjoy it, this will be the last time in your life that you have any clue about child rearing.

6.Child Prep #6- Forget the BMW and buy a SUV. Don’t think you can leave it out in the driveway spotless and shining. Family cars don’t look like that. Buy a chocolate ice and put it in the glove compartment. Leave it there. Get a grease gun. Shoot some in the cassette player. Take three peeled bananas. Mash them down the back seats. Run a garden rake along both sides of the car. There. Perfect.

7.Child Prep #7- Can you stand the mess children make? To find out, first smear marmalade onto the sofa and jam onto the curtains. Hide a fish finger behind the stereo and leave it there all summer. Stick your fingers in the flower beds then rub them on the clean walls. Cover the stains with crayons. Ask yourself, how does that look?

8.Child Prep #8- Hollow out a melon. Make a small hole in the side. Suspend it from the ceiling and swing it from side to side. Now get a bowl of soggy corn flakes and attempt to spoon it into the swaying melon by pretending to be an airplane. Continue until half the corn flakes are gone. Tip the rest into your lap, making sure that a lot of it falls on the floor. You are now ready to feed a 12 month old baby.

9.Child Prep #9- To discover how the nights will feel, walk around the living room from 5pm to 10pm carrying a bag of water weighing approximately 12 lb. At 10pm put the bag down, set the alarm for midnight, and go to sleep. Get up at 12 and walk around the living room again, with the bag, till 1am. Put the alarm on for 3am. As you can’t get back to sleep get up at 2am and make a drink. Go to bed at 2.45am. Get up again at 3am when the alarm goes off. Sing songs in the dark until 4am. Put the alarm on for 5am. Get up. Make breakfast. Keep this up for 5 years. Look cheerful.

10.Child Prep 10- Sample the Destructive Powers of Childhood. Borrow a dozen baseballs from your little league coach friend. Put on any type of helmet. In the room with the most windows, turn the ceiling fan on high. If you don’t have a lot of windows a glass front hutch holding fine china will work nicely. While protecting yourself as best you can (you will get better at this after your children become teenagers) throw each baseball at the spinning fan.

Do you need more???

Have a dilemma, can I get some opinions please?

They went with us last weekend, and she is going to jail for 25 days on Tuesday, during which time I will have her kids. I told her she and the kids could not go this weekend because I wanted to have a weekend for just my girls and I.
J Camp answers:

Here are 2 favorites that everyone in our family likes.

We call the first one Corny Beef or Corny Chicken. Depending on your favorite meat, pack either a foil packet of white meat chicken (found in the grocery near canned tuna) or a ziploc bag of already browned ground beef. Add either an ear of fresh corn or a small can of corn (if there’s no can tab, pack an opener). Take a medium onion too. During the few days before your trip, collect packets of sauce from your favorite fast food restaurants – Arby’s sauce, Taco Bell sauce, soy sauce, etc. Also salt and pepper packets. You don’t need to swipe them – just ask and they’ll be fine with it. Take a small mess kit pan with you for each person. First add the meat and get it hot, then add the other ingredients, sauces and spices, and cook until hot. It’s great, and you can make a number of variations.

We call the second one Hobo Dinner. Use heavy duty aluminum foil as your “pan”. Add a meat, cut up potato, corn, onion. Fold the foil and make sure it won’t spill in the fire. You can lay it directly on the hottest part of the fire to cook. Make sure you have a utensil to take it back out with when it’s really hot.

Using precooked, packaged meat makes the preparation really easy and can eliminate the need for a cooler.

For breakfast, try this favorite. Get a pot of water boiling by heating it on a Coleman stove. For each person, bring a large ziploc bag, a big metal hinged paper clip, and a dowel or long chopstick. Open the ziploc bag and put in raw egg (of course, no shells), precooked sausage or bacon (you can use ready-to-eat bacon from the grocery), diced onion, diced peppers, and shredded cheese. Close the bag, put the binder clip on it, and put the dowel through the metal loop of the binder clip. Mix the contents of the bag by “massaging” it from the outside. Put the bag into the boiling water, hanging from the dowel. The bag will not melt while your food cooks. Eat it directly out of the bag.

If you want bread, take a box of dry Bisquick powder. Add water to make biscuits. The recipe on the box might call for more ingredients, but you can get by with just water.

These ideas are always good and very easy. Bon appetit!

Recently my family and I went camping and this it what we took:
I have 2 small children that are kinda picky too

Hotdogs/buns/relish/ketchup
bratwursts/beans/bread
hamburgers/buns/chips
pancakes, individual packs- i mixed it in a cup with water
hash
fresh fruits
milk, lots of water, and beer
all time favorite and simple PB&J’s
pot and a pan of course
I also took eggs, but the dry Ice i packed everything in froze the eggs, so they were goners
We had a campfire, but I cooked everything on my small coleman bbq, you can just put the pan for pancakes or the pot for beans right on it.
I hope this helped a little.
Good luck and have fun

As a previous answerer has said, Chili is a big favorite of mine for serving lots of folks in an outdoor setting. Cornbread can also be made ahead of time and gently warmed (in aluminum foil) to serve with the Chili, or regular grocery-store tortillas are good, too.

I’ve also done beef stew… Or shephard’s pie, which is a thick stew made with ground beef & whatever veggies you like, then put a mashed-potato ‘top’ over the big pot and serve it in big slice/scoops. Lots of fun.

Dumplings cooked in a big pot of beef or lamb stew are also good and easy to make and fun for kids. Just use ‘bisquick’ for the dumpling mix, and drop it by the spoonful into the top of the simmering stew and serve.

If you have a big open fire going, hot-dogs are an easy way to go and kids like doing it, too. (Bring extras to replace the few that will undoubtably drop into the fire!) If its all adults, make the hot-dogs bratwurst or gourmet sausages and instead of buns use nice french rolls or something similar.

Don’t try and get too fancy with a big group. Keep it simple. Everything tastes better outdoors, anyway!

Dawn, Let me tell you what to do. My husband will not go without his satelite dish. If you have satelite tv you can take the receiver and program the zip code in and you are there. To buy the dish set up for him DON’T BUY ONE AT A CAMPING STORE. Look in the phone book for an electonics store(we have one called Shields…knox., tn) and you can buy a dish with one transponder. The transponder is the round white thing pointing toward the dish. If you have one you will not get the local channels but we only paid 30 dollars for it.
Ask them for a stand(20 bucks I think) which will hold the satelite but you will have to go to Home Depot or Lowe’s for an aluminum fence post(10 bucks). You will probably need it to be cut down some. A small tv at Wal-mart for another 60 I guess.

Here’s the Skillet we use from coleman. Could check out Ebay?
For his fishing equipment get him a gift card from Bass Pro Shops…It will make your life easier because he will want to get a specific pole, fishing line, or whatever. They have cots and organizers for the cots.
You could also get him an air mattress(I recommend Coleman with the push in air hole so the air doesn’t leak out), and maybe an Ozark trail fold out bed. Paul hates to get up off the ground when he wakes up to take that morning bathroom visit.
Rope lights are sweet for lighting anywhere. They are so versatile. Also, a headlamp at Wal-mart about 10-20 dollars. Theres nothing worse than trying to hold a flashlight when you are tying a hook at night or fumbling with anything at night. Citronella/oil lamps the lantern types are good for bugs and a big jug of Citronella so he can jump start the fire in case of rain.
Ozark Trail tents are good quality. We had one that went through almost an F-2 rainstorm and did not leak at all with no seam sealer or sprays. Highly recommended.
A small 10-15 dollar Holmes heater from Lowes or HD does wonders for keeping the moisture off your bed and that wet feeling in your bed.
Bins to organize all the stuff. You can have it all organized in the bins for him…God he will love that. Wrap the bins with packing lists inside.

Well, if you are using a car to get wherever you are going, I highly recommend getting a car or camping fridge. They plug into your car cigarette lighter, and give you the versatility of bringing food that would otherwise spoil. That will keep your turkey breasts from spoiling (even on a multi-day trip) and give you ammunition to bring along other yummy, nutritious stuff.

This is a time for you to experience the wilderness when you’re going on your trip. In the wilderness there is usually no electricity, and there is usually no places for you to take a shower. With the type of trip that you have outlined, you will be roughing it.

Good Strong footware such as hiking boots
Woolen socks as these tend to keep drier longer

tent and supplies for camping, across america w/2 dogs?

I am looking to pack my small SUV up with myself, basic supplies and two dogs, 40lb mutt and 80lb german shepherd, from New York to California in August. I have not yet considered how long this will take. First off, any suggestions on tents, there’s so many to choose from and an abundance of add-ons, I would love some feedback from the public on their experience,

What is significant: space, the dogs will sleep in there with me, quick and easy set up and take down, lack of fiddly lines and tie downs, Im planning on taking the northern path cross country so suitability for all temperatures and environments, ventilation, two dogs and me generate a lot of heat.
What is not significant: weight, it will be in the car and I wont be carrying it far, price, I will want to keep this for a long time and use it again.

Any decent links to camping reviews, packing lists etc are appreciated, also, if anyone has done this before with dogs, tips and hints and recommendations for places dog friendly along the way would be wonderful, thanks in advance!
great advice from all, and the safety of my dogs is the great priority here, dont worry, were making some re-con trips over the next few weeks in preparation,
GPS: check!!
Veterinary locations: check,
Emergency veterinary care kit: check, thanks again!

J Camp answers:

When I take my puppy (10 year-old, 85-Lb shepherd mix) camping and am solo, a two person tent is more than sufficient for her, my gear and me. I wouldn’t have any trouble fitting a second, smaller dog in as well. So I think that any 2-person tent or larger would be fine. If you plan on sleeping on a double- or queen-sized air mattress, then you’d need to go with a 4-person or larger tent unless your dogs sleep in bed with you. With tents, each person is allocated about 26″ width, so a queen-size mattress will take up as much space as 2.5 “persons.”

There’s so many different tents to choose from it’s hard to make a recommendation. I’ve always had good luck with Eureka, and the aforementioned 2-person tent is more than 15 years old and is still in wonderful shape, despite being used at least 500 nights. Since weight is not a concern, you’ll be doing mostly short stays by yourself with two dogs, I’d suggest a 4-person dome tent. Don’t go much larger, or else you’ll have trouble setting-up alone. You should pick out a tent in-person at a camping/outdoors store such as REI, EMS, Campmor (if you’re nearby) or similar. Look for a good brand name (Eureka, Kelty, Marmot, North Face) and then features like:

* Bathtub Floor — floor material wraps up the sides before joining the wall
. Material so the seams are less likely to leak
* Full Coverage Fly — better wind and rain protection
* Clip or Sleeve/Clip setup — faster and easier setup (try to get spare clips
. In case one breaks or gets lost).
* Vents/Doors — Look for cross-ventilation and easy access for you and
. Your dogs.
* Pre-Sealed or Taped Seams — better rain protection.
* Material thickness — different models use different weights/weaves of nylon.
. Heavier weight is more durable, particularly on the floor panel where sharp
. Dog nails might be an issue.

Any tent you get will need to be staked-down against the wind. I can’t tell you how many time’s I’ve retrieved tents for neighbors who thought they could get by without staking. Most dome tents use two or three straight poles that are all shock-corded together, so there’s little to get confused over when setting-up and minimal time and effort. The fly is optional and, depending on the tent design, only needed when it rains or to cut the wind. I’d avoid cabin tents or modified domes that have angled poles and other fiddly bits to deal with, even if they are typically taller and more spacious.

Aside from the tent you’ll need a ground sheet to help protect the floor. Best option here is to get some heavy polypro painter’s drop sheets from your local home improvement store and then cut about about 3″/side wider/longer than the floor of your tent. This extra material gets folded up and tucked under the tent to prevent water from accumulating under the floor.

Next thing is what will you sleep on. I assume you’ll bring temperature-appropriate sleeping bag for you. If space isn’t a concern, I’d suggest a folding camp cot with a foam pad on top for comfort and insulation, otherwise a thick foam mat. As for the dogs, except in the coldest weather, your shepherd won’t need any extra insulation, (mine won’t sleep inside her cut-down sleeping bag unless it’s below 10 degrees), I don’t know about your other dog. My shepherd is also content to sleep on the ground, but happier when I bring her own foam mat along.

No issues with dog supplies, except to have an air-tight container for dog food storage and treat it like any other food in regards to wildlife (particularly bears and raccoons): keep away from your tent, locked in your car or bear lockers where provided. Skip those overpriced, folding dog bowls at the pet store, just bring your regular bowls from home and a collapsible food storage bowl (about $6) for water on the trail.

Having up-to-date rabies vaccinations with written certificate from your vet and dog licenses is essential. Most campgrounds won’t accept you without these items. Of course other vaccinations should be up-to-date as well, for your dogs’ health. Bring a copy of both your and your dogs’ major medical information with you in case of emergency. Veterinarian access is usually as simple as looking through a local phone book, or you can use the Pet Travel Center’s website’s search function at http://www.pettravelcenter.com/veterinarians. Don’t forget flea/tick drops, leashes, dog run wire or rope, and favorite play toys. Oh, get an ID tag made with your cell phone number and home address for each dog, in case they somehow get lost (it does happen).

Bring a good first aid kit, it should cover the essentials for you and your dogs. Nail trimmers and a grooming brush (for the dogs — I’ll assume you already were bringing your own!). If you or your dogs take prescription meds, take along a fresh prescription with you in case you run out or medicine gets lost or contaminated during your trip.

essential camping supplies!!?

hi! so 7 of my good friends and I are going to go camping this weekend. I need to make a quick list of the things we need to buy or get to make this weekend as smooth and fun as possible. I’ve made mine, but was hoping I could get some help and make sure that I have everything!

What would you bring camping for a 3 night/4 day trip? We are between 18-20, and dont want to spend a ton of money…we plan to all just pitch in 10-15 bucks to help buy food. So this has to be a pretty slim list! Thanks for your help!

Well..

Number 1 item on the list, a can opener! Don’t leave home without it.

Other than that, if you are driving to your campsite weight is not an issue.

Get canned foods, they don’t require ice.

Get some tasty specialty breads.

Get some marshmallows. Take a couple of wire hangers.

Get a couple of cans of Spam, no camping trip is complete without it.

The usual stuff such as bedding, blankets, sleeping bags, pillows, beanbag chairs, chairs. Tables, flashlights, lanterns, duct tape, more duct tape, rope in various sizes, tents, awnings, pads for sleeping, cots, hammocks, teddy bear, and anything else you can stuff in the car.

Things that I take on camping trips that you may not have include rifles, pistols, revolvers, shotguns, and pyrotechnical devices, they can liven up a dull evening.

There is one other thing that is critical, it is called fire starting equipment. Take several lighters, bunches of matches, and some more matches. There is nothing worse than spending a night camping without fire. Mankind learned that lesson about 50,000 years ago, no need for you to learn by experience.

P.S. Take a can opener. A buddy of mine once hiked back into the mountains all morning, about midday he and his friend decided to eat some lunch. They had only brought canned food. They then found that they had not brought a can opener, and nether one was carrying a knife. Have you ever tried to open a can of beans with a Ruger Blackhawk in .357 Mag, what a mess. The result was they decided to cut their trip short, and hiked back to the car.

P.S.S. Take a selection of knives, hatchets, and axes, very useful. Don’t forget some rope.

Packing list for 1-night primitive camping?

My boyfriend and I are going to a state park for the “astronomy night” and stargazing, then we are hiking along a 7-mild trail to a primitive camping spot. We’re eating dinner before we arrive, just packing snacks and the like for breakfast, drive out somewhere for lunch, then either head to a wild life preserve for the rest of the day or if we’re too tired we’ll just head home. It’s about a 5 hour car ride from home to where we’re going.

Can anyone supply a complete list of items we should be sure to bring? It would be beyond appreciated!
It’s in a national forest, 7 mile hike, you can only bring what you carry with you… they call it “primitive camping” at the park location.

Are you going to be stopping and cooking or does it have to be ready to eat.
High calorie and high carbs will probably be the best option so things like baked potatoes with cheese, tuna, beans etc if you are able to put in fire. If not then you should really be taking with you tinned fish, packets of noodles, beans, chocolate, glucose sweets. Make sure you do have water with you as you will go through that.
Basically keep it simple, easy to cook, easy to digest and provide you with the extra you will need for the extra exercise.

Duct tape. I NEVER camp without it. I’ve repaired canoes, patched clothing, repaired tents, made bandages, and even attached a homemade spear point to a spear shaft.
J Camp answers:

Well, i go canoing and camping almost every week-end throughout the summer and let me tell you what we take; may come in handy. First we camp along the river in tents…just the open fire pit…no grill accept a griddle that is normally balanced on rocks (awsome). We normally take (for 2 adults and 3 children 14,14,11)….
Five potatoes(great wrapped in foil with butter to put really close to the fire for baking.
1 can of corn….open the top and put near the fire in the can.
Smores (of course).
Meat is normally samon or deer steak.
For breakfast it is sausage!
Other food to take as a snack is chips (pringles open and close easier), shoe string fries (found in the chip isle too; also in a can), pretzels (can’t go wrong), jerky (great for in between meals), freeze all drinks….saves on ice and they melt over the short period of time…also great for keeping your cooler cool. Oh, put your grease and butter in the same small tub for cooking…they both are hard and it won’t hurt your cooking any.

Beginning Senior year soon with 13 credits need 23 to graduate, online too expensive.. will need 3 more full..?

I was thinking about going to an alc school, which i probably will end up doing but if anybody has any other idea’s that would be great. I absolutely need to graduate on time because i’ve joined the marine corps and if i don’t have my degree the day i’m supposed to ship to boot camp i will be royally screwed. So i fubared my freshman year and didnt pass one class because of my bad attitude then started trying softmore year i have 13 credits now at the end of my junior year and 7 more coming as long as i pass all of my classes this coming year which i can assure you i will. So that makes 20, like i said in the title the minimum is 23 so that leaves 3 full credits. Credits are rewarded in halves per class so that 6 class semesters worth. which each cost 130+ each online and my family is in debt and seriously, we cannot pay for it so dont propose that as an option please. Anybody know of any credit recover programs that are free or maybe the legislative view on families in debt needing credit recovery but not having it supplied to them because i have seen many free websites for it and i know of other people who have done them in the past but my school counselor (who is a big douche) tells me the school only allows the ones that cost money.

What is this movie. . Sorry for the lack of information. .?

A few years ago, I am not sure how long. . A movie came on and there was a group of young adults (I believe they all had heavy English accents, but I am not sure like I said it was a while back) trapped in this place with a concrete round door either under ground or something outside. I think they went there for like a camping type trip and someone locked them in. . They all fought for their survival due to lack of food and other supplies. I remember them like filtering toilet water to drink and what not. And I think at the end there was only two survivors and the female one learned that the other guy purposely locked them in, just something went wrong. I do not know I am sorry if anyone actually followed this. I would love to know what the name of this movie is, and if there is somewhere I can watch it online. Thank you.
Jesus and Materialism? Please help me?

This has been bothering me for such a long time know.I’m just an 18 year old girl. I’m Orthodox but went to Catholic school for 6 years, I also went to Christian camp for 3 years. But this is the probably first time in my life I ever had such strong thoughts and feelings about Jesus’s opinions to the point I feel like I want to cry because I don’t know what Jesus thinks about materialism. I’ve never been overly materialistic, and I had dreams of opening my own Christian type school, or maybe other types of buisness some like for school supplies and maybe others to help people. But my problem is that when I go looking inside of a mall, I’ve looked at something nice, but I couldn’t put my heart to really want it, no matter how desirable it looks, yes sometimes i do buy even though i feel selfish. But when I look know, I just can’t help but think what does Jesus want me to do, does he let me buy it, does he want me to be simple, what exactly is his opinion. I see a beautiful but extremely simple dress online that is like 400 dollars. im asking myself is it worth it, sure i can afford it, i have the money, but what does Jesus want me to do? even if I buy it lets say, does it really matter if i buy it as long as i buy it with my hard earned money. does Jesus allow u to be materialistic to a certain extent. i put this huge and silly thought in my head that Jesus wants us to be poor and not own pretty things. like the rich guy said no to give his riches to the poor. i though Jesus asked him to give it all away. I just don’t understand Jesus. But i read through other peoples answers and opinions. And people said that as long as you seek God,and you never forget Jesus, I read that they allow u to be materialistic to a point where it doesnt control you. I keep feeling that God is like somehow randomly affected my life in less than a year. I don’t understand where these thoughts randomly appeared from. I mean i never did drugs, smoked, i never had many friends casue i moved, or never had the prettiest clothes, i barly wore makeup or did anything special with my hair, i also saved the majority of the money from my job. i just dont understand myself, plz help me!

J Camp answers:

Yes you are confused, and confusion is not from God. If you have the money and want something don’t be so hard on yourself for buying it. Satan wants to bring you down with worthless thoughts. Your real problem is believing what you hear instead of seeking God out for yourself. Spend time in the word and in prayer and worship (also listening for him to talk to you), and let the Holy Spirit teach you. Your relationship with Christ is most important right now. See forerunnertv.com for awesome testimonies and teachings.

PCSing to Osan later this year…?

Hey, All. I’m PCSing to Osan and want to get the skinny before hand. I’m a MSgt in the AF and plan on taking my family with me (command sponsored or not). I heard SNCO dorms are pratically non-existent so I should be living off base anyhow. My mom is Korean and will be taking care of my 1 year old. So, they should feel at home there. I’ve never been stationed there so I don’t know what to expect.

What I’m really looking for is some online sites to research homes and apartment rentals. Everything seems to come up for Camp Humphreys and I would like to live in Songtan instead. How much do these places go for and is there a huge supply? Or, will I have to pay an arm and a leg and wait forever? I hate not knowing….

J Camp answers:

The best thing to do is ask for a sponser and contact the base family support center (if they have one) or the housing office. They can give you info on rentals and such. While I can understand why you are bringing your family along, just remember that without sponsership from your command, they will not be under SOFA status, which means they do not have the help or protection of the military in any criminal or court matters. It can also mean they have restricted access to base facilites such as health care and DoDDS schools (those are only for dependents on orders), so if you have any kids school age it may be tough to get them into school on base. I always tell any military moving family members without orders to do all the research now…about the cost to move them (which will be all your’s and I can assure you your weight allowance will not cover moving an entire household there), the facilities that will be avialble to them as un-sponsered dependents and the costs.

The Jonas Brothers aren’t that popular in Australia so I doubt you would be able to buy Camp Rock Party supplies. But if you find a website that sells the items you want you could always buy a prepaid visa card at your local post office and use that to purchase what you want if your worried about internet security.
