First Aid Steps
Airway - Check for an open airway. Sweep for an obstructing object with your finger. Reposition the patient's tongue if obstructing airway. Perform the head tilt/chin lift to open the airway if necessary. Be careful not to disturb the patient's cervical spine if head and or neck injury is suspected.
Breathing - Check for adequate breathing: look, listen, feel. If patient is not breathing, give two ventilating breaths. Make sure patient is breathing before proceeding to next step.
Circulation - Assess for signs of circulation: pulse, breathing, coughing, movement. If no circulation, start CPR. Check for major bleeding and control.
Disability - Maintain manual stabilization of the spine.
Environment / Expose - Assess and treat environmental hazards; expose serious wounds.
